THE BIRDS OF FLORIDA
![]()

The Great Blue Heron. Picture taken early morning at the Arthur M. Loxahatchee Wildlife Refuge in Boyton Beach. It's a northern extension of the Everglades. |
Great Egret. He was lounging around the 7th tee at the Okeeheelee Park Golf Course. |
|
Female Anhinga. She was perched on the spruce tree right next to the trail at the Wakodahatchee Wetlands - I caught her as she was preening her feathers. These birds are also known as "snakebirds" due to their habit of swimming with just their head above the water. They actually swim underwater to catch fish...but they lack the necessary oil gland to keep their feathers waterproof - therefore you see them at the edge of water with their wings held out to dry. |
Tricolor or Louisiana Heron. He was resting on a small damn near a small lake at the Okeeheelee Park. I watched him for about an hour....and the most he did was yawn and pick at one feather. |
|
Green Heron at the Wakodahatchee Wetlands. I took this picture using my teleconverter....which gives all images a bluish tint....but it also allowed me to lessen the distance between me and the bird by half. |
Little Blue Heron. They like to fish in "lettuce lakes" which refers to the lettuce-like greenery that this fellow is walking on. This picture was taken at the Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary near Naples, Florida. |
|
Mottled Duck duo. We have many ducks that pass through Florida on their annual migration. The mottled ducks tend to reside here year-round. This pair is found at the Wakodahatchee Wetlands. |
